Biotin

Biotin, also known as B7, is a water-soluble vitamin found in foods such as eggs, milk, and bananas. Biotin is commonly supplemented for multiple conditions, such as hair loss, brittle nails, and nerve damage.

L-Carnitine

Carnitine is FDA approved and available over the counter as a dietary supplement. It is often promoted as a weight-loss aid to help improve exercise performance and enhance one’s sense of well-being.

Glutathione

A powerful antioxidant made of amino acids. Supplementally, glutathione can be taken in the treatment and prevention of cataracts, glaucoma, aging, alcoholism, cancer, heart disease, liver disease, lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, osteoarthritis, diseases that breakdown the body’s immune system and many more.

L -Arginine

Used in improving athletic performance, preventing the common cold, improving kidney function after a kidney transplant, pre-eclampsia, boosting the immune system. It helps to speed wound healing, increase blood flow to cold hands and feet (helpful in those with diabetes), and for sexual issues in both men and females.

Lysine

Lysine, or l-lysine, is an amino acid that can be used in the treatment of cold sores due to herpes simplex. Some research has shown it may be effective in the treatment of osteoporosis, diabetes, stress, and for athletic performance improvement.

CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body. CoQ10 is also in many foods we eat. CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant, which protects cells from damage and plays an important part in the metabolism.

Taurine

L-Taurine, otherwise known as taurine, is a conditional amino acid. There are many conditions that use taurine for treatment, including congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, hepatitis, high cholesterol, and cystic fibrosis.

Lipo C

Lipo-C injection contains a mixture of compounds that may aid in the reduction of adipose tissue (fat). The mixture of compounds individually may be effective, however in combination they may exhibit more lipotropic activity than when administered alone in a synergistic fashion.

Magnesium Chloride

Magnesium chloride, or magnesium, is a mineral that is important in maintaining the function of our nerves, cells, bones, muscles, and heart.

Selenium

Toradol

Toradol is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ketorolac works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Zofran

Prevents nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy) and radiation therapy. It is also used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting after surgery. It works by blocking one of the body's natural substances (serotonin) that causes vomiting.

Benadryl

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergy, hay fever, and the common cold.

Pepcid

Pepcid is a histamine-2 blocker (H2 blocker) with the active ingredient famotidine that helps relieve heartburn by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.

Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace element commonly found in red meat, poultry, and fish. It is necessary in small amounts for human health, growth, and sense of taste. Zinc is also used for acne, diabetes, anorexia, burns, and many other purposes.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in the body and serves vital functions at the cellular level, such as energy production. ALA has been used in supplement form to help in the treatment of diabetes, HIV, cancer, liver ailments, and has recently gained more popularity in the use of weight loss.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

Also known as Vitamin C, is an antioxidant that plays an important role in the body. It not only protects the body’s cells from damage, but it is also needed to maintain the health of skin, teeth, bone, cartilage, and blood vessels.

BCAA

This amino blend could help boost your metabolism, improve energy levels, increase endurance and help to burn fat. It also provides your body essential and nonessential amino acids it requires to stay healthy.

Methylcobalamin (B12)

An important vitamin needed for the brain, nerves, and production of red blood cells in the body. It is used to treat not only vitamin B12 deficiency, but also other conditions, such as pernicious anemia and diabetes.

Folic Acid

Folic Acid a B vitamin. It helps the body make healthy new cells. Everyone needs folic acid. For women who may get pregnant, it is really important. Getting enough folic acid before and during pregnancy can prevent major birth defects of her baby's brain or spine.

Glycine

A building block for making proteins in the body. Glycine is also involved in transmitting chemical signals in the brain, so there's interest in using it for schizophrenia and improving memory.   

Calcium Chloride

Calcium chloride is used in the immediate treatment of hypocalcemic tetany, which causes muscle spasms due to abnormally low levels of calcium in the body.

Semaglutide

What is it?

  • It is a Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) Receptor Agonist previously used solely as a diabetes medication

    o Originally approved by the FDA under the brand name Ozempic in December 2017

  • Now used as an aid for healthy weight loss o Approved by the FDA in June 2021

How does it work?

  • It decreases your appetite by:
    o Slowing down your gastric emptying
    o Acting in areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite and caloric intake

  • It helps with diabetes by:
    o Increasing release of insulin (helping sugar get into your cells to utilize energy and lower blood sugar)
    o Decreasing inappropriate release of glucagon secretion (the hormone that increases blood sugars)

What are the benefits:

  • Weight loss

  • Decreased body fat percentage

  • Diabetes prevention/treatment

  • Lower HbA1c levels

  • Improved fertility

  • Treatment of PCOS

Who qualifies for it?

  • Overweight individuals that do not have contraindications to the medication (i.e., history of thyroid cancer)

    o If our certified Doctoral level Nurse Practitioner (DNP) decides you are not a good candidate for the medication, you will not be charged for your initial visit should not take if pregnant or plan to be while using medication

    What is the dosing?

    You will receive a once/week subcutaneous injection (smaller and shorter needle than used for vaccinations)

    Your dose will be slowly titrated monthly
    o Starting dose of 0.25 mg once weekly
    o Max/maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly

    How long will I be on it?

    This varies patient to patient based on response to the medication and how quickly weight loss goals are met

    Most patients will likely be on it approximately 6 months, though could be shorter/longer

    What are possible side effects?

    • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, heartburn, burping, dizziness o Mostly during dose escalation and tend to decrease over time

    How can I minimize side effects?

    • Limit foods/drinks that are high in unhealthy fats or sugars
    o i.e., fried foods, processed foods, desserts, alcohol, etc.

    What are the risks?

  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)-small overall risk. Increased risk with preexisting kidney impairment or periods of severe dehydration

  • Diabetic retinopathy: Primarily with preexisting diabetic retinopathy or large and rapid decline in HbA1C (measure of severity of diabetes)

  • Gallbladder disease: higher risk with longer treatment (>26 weeks) or substantial and rapid weight loss

  • Allergic Reaction: anaphylaxis or angioedema possible

  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma: noted in animal studies. Patients with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome may be at increased risk

  • Pancreatitis: Small overall risk. Increased risk with prior history of pancreatitis, or have

  • other risk factors for pancreatitis, including: high lipids, cholelithiasis, alcohol use, and obesity

How can I maintain the weight I lose after discontinuing the medication?
